Stitch and Wooly by Susanne Westphal

Description designmilk

These Stitch and Wooly chairs by Susanne Westphal are her final graduate project from the University of Art and Design Burg Gibiechenstein. She asked the question “Why do we have less time then ever before, although we invented time saving things?”

The unfinished chairs are a reminder that we need to take time with things so each chair gets completed by the user. Using wool, one can stitch and upholster the chairs, and the more time that is spent on them, the more comfortable and attractive they are. By taking your time constructing the chairs, they teach you to slow down, relax, and unwind.

ReCraft Your Chair: Knitting Eames Wire Chair
Description thecraft
Having achieved success with their plywood and molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames challenged themselves to make a reasonably priced, strong but lightweight, quality chair out of bent wire. Introduced in 1951, it was an immediate hit. Distinctively, unmistakably Eames, the wire chair has stood the test of time and is as popular today as it was half a century ago. Here is a moder take on these chairs by Akira Ishikawa.

Illustrative Sewing

Description illusionscene360

These are unique thread drawings by Amanda Mccavour.

Top: Photo by Vitamin Water Canada.

Notes from the artist’s statement:

In my work, I use a sewing machine to create thread drawings and installations by sewing into a fabric that dissolves in water. This fabric makes it possible for me to build up the thread by sewing repeatedly into my drawn images so that when the fabric is dissolved, the image can hold together without a base. These thread images appear as though they would be easily unraveled and seemingly on the verge of falling apart, despite the works actual raveled strength.

I am interested in the vulnerability of thread, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together.  I am interested in the connections between process and materials and the way that they relate to images and spaces.  Tracing actions and environments through a process of repetition, translation and dissolving, I hope to trace absence.  My work is a process of making as a way of tracing and preserving things that are gone, or slowly falling apart.

Cute Wool Characters

Description illusionscene360

Needle point and crochet art by Nicole Gastonguay.

Notes about the artist (from bio):

Nicole Gastonguay is a fiber artist living and working in New York City. To pay the bills and feed her tummy, she’s a graphic designer at a big publishing house.

[…]

Lots of people write and ask her for patterns. She doesn’t really have patterns. She makes things up as she goes along. She also thinks it’s neato that when she makes several of the same character, this lack of pattern having, makes every item turn out just a little bit different. She likes that. And so do you. She also thinks talking in the third person is hysterical.
