A Letter to Momo // ももへの手紙

Description emptykingdom

April 23, 2012
By

Nowadays, I can pretty much rely on an animated feature to have a certain level of craftsmanship and style. It’s really somewhat of an expected standard. But when I heard that director Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade), animation director / character designer Masashi Ando, and art director Hiroshi Ohno were joining forces for a collaborative release, I gave a sigh of relief knowing that the bar would once again be set even higher. A Letter to Momo // ももへの手紙, appreciate it folks. More story details as follows (via TIFF 2011):

“Seven years in the making, the exquisitely crafted A Letter to Momo is the highly anticipated second feature from world-renowned anime director Hiroyuki Okiura, whose 1999 film Jin-Roh met with international acclaim.

Clinging to an unfinished letter written by her recently deceased father, young Momo moves with her mother from bustling Tokyo to the remote Japanese island of Shio. Upon their arrival, she begins to explore her new habitat, meeting local children and learning their routines and customs. However, it’s not long before several bizarre occurrences crop up around the previously tranquil island. Orchards are found ransacked, prized trinkets start disappearing and, worst of all, each morning after her mother leaves for work, Momo hears strange mumblings coming from the attic of their home.

Annoyed by these creepy goings-on and her mother’s refusal to believe them, Momo embarks on a strange and supernatural adventure to discover the source of the mischief, which leads her to a trio of troublesome imps: the flatulent lizard Kawa, the childlike Mame and their hulking ogre leader Iwa. Momo also learns that her visit to the island is in some way connected to her father’s mysterious letter.

After a decade-long absence from the director’s chair, Okiura has enlisted a world-class team of creators, including animation supervisor Masashi Ando, who previously worked on Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. From the painstakingly rendered serenity of the island’s Shinto shrines to the film’s high-energy, ghostly climax, A Letter to Momo is a triumph of traditional hand-drawn animation. This sensitive coming-of-age story is both a child-friendly exploration of loss and an enchanting flight of imagination.”

Fiat 500 by Gucci

Description nowness

Director Chris Sweeney Celebrates the Italian Fashion House’s New Twist on an Automotive Icon

High heels, handbags and perfume bottles are transformed into a steering wheel, car exhaust and wheel rims by a vacuum-forming machine in director Chris Sweeney’s short for the new Fiat 500 by Gucci. Originally launched in 1957, the latest iteration of the doe-eyed classic has been specially customized by Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini, who enhanced the Fiat 500’s distinguishing traits and added the fashion house’s signature detailing via a signature red-green web down the side and the unmistakable “Guccissima” leather print on the seats. Invited alongside visionaries such as Italian Vogue’s Franco Sozzani and Purple’s Olivier Zahm to dream up a film celebrating the partnership between the Italian automaker and fashion house, Sweeney created a giant plastic model kit of the Fiat 500 by Gucci like the ones he used to make as a kid. “It’s an extreme, austere fashion version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Wallace and Gromit, which are very playful, silly, colorful and magic,” explains Sweeney of his film. An established music video director who has made shorts for the likes of Foals, Friendly Fires and original Pop Idol Will Young, the London-based Sweeney’s graphic rhythms have been sought by luxury brand YSL, hairstyling prodigy Charlie Le Mindu and fashion titles Vogue and i-D. “The Fiat 500 is a car that everyone holds close to their hearts,” says Sweeney. “It’s an icon of design.”

Trailer: The Grandmasters

DEscription emptykingdom

While my dark apron is the man who runs the cinema dept. I couldn’t help but put up this trailer for Wong Kar Wai’s film new film that is in post-production… The Grandmasters.  The film looks like a sweet take on the legendary Ip Man.  Surely WKW’s version will be much more philosophical/artistic than the Donnie Yen incarnation…  but I’m going to say the trailer does look a lot more slick and “mainstream” than any of his previous films… either way it’s going to be awesome.  It’s supposed to premiere at Venice Film Festival, but knowing WKW’s track record, I’m not even going to speculate when it’s coming out.. but let’s just say when it does… I might just fly my ass to whatever country it is showing in.

Film One: Harry (Archer & Bowyer)

This is the first in a series of portrait films by director Dylan Ryan Byrne. The idea behind the series is to explore what lies behind people’s passions and what shapes their unique take on life.

Film One explores the craft and philosophy behind bow making and archery with Ireland’s champion traditional archer, Harry.

Harry’s preferred bow is the Fusetake Yumi (Japanese bamboo backed longbow), the film follows the process of him making this bow in his workshop which lies in the depths of the Irish countryside.
