Student Work – Daniel Brokstad
Description lovelypakage
Designed by Daniel Brokstad | Country: Norway
“Possession is a limited edition unholy wine collection, featuring three different red wines; “Evil Demon – Bloody Shiraz”, “Haunting Ghost – Spoory Cabernet” and “Old Witch – Cursed Pinot Noir”. All the wines comes in a solid coffin-shaped glossy casing, which adds to the exclusiveness of the wine series. Each are based on different occult themes as satanism, the paranormal and witchcraft. The type design on each bottle reflects it’s theme and was made in a rough way to contrast the otherwise clean setup and design, to give it more of an edgy look. This is a self initialized conceptual design.”

Marou Chocolate
Description packagingoftheworld
Designed by Rice Creative, Vietnam.
Chocolate makers working directly at the source of the cacao farms are still very few and far between. Marou Faiseurs de Chocolat, based in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is one such company who have created the first single origin gourmet bean-to-bar chocolate to come out of Vietnam.
Marou was founded less than a year ago by two adventurous Frenchmen. They decided, to use the small amounts of cacao beans harvested, fermented and dried on small family farms throughout the Mekong Delta and southern highlands of Vietnam, to make an extraordinary chocolate.
Marou approached Rice Creative at the beginning of their adventure, with the mission to build the brand’s visual identity and packaging.
Inspired by Marou’s unique story, we sought to develop an identity and packaging system with the right mixture of modernity and tradition. The most exciting aspect of the product for us, was that each variant of Marou Chocolate could be based on the province from where the cacao beans grow. The geographical location of the farm and its soil determines the characteristics of the cacao beans and therefore the flavour of the chocolate.
After much deliberation, we found the simplest way to create a system for the bars was to name each bar after the province where it’s beans originated, and ascribe a natural colour-shift. Seeing the Trinitario cacao pods first hand, we found a greatly inspirational spectrum of hues. Deep vermillion to ochre yellow, grass green, midnight blue, and flushes of peacock aqua all appear.
We wanted the packaging to be strongly linked to Vietnam. We began collecting beautiful ceremonial papers that are still produced by artisanal printers in Cho Lon, the old Chinese quarter of Saigon. These papers are hand printed with intricate traditional lattice patterns. Typically, the patterns are adorned with illustrated fruits, flowers and auspicious animals. Inspired by this illustration style we hand drew our own original chocolate oriented ornaments of cacao pods, flowers and leaves, throwing in some heavenly looking clouds for the tropical monsoon. Our custom lattice pattern keeps a traditional look and creates a framework to incorporate some modernist typography, inspired by the old signage still found around the country.
To highlight the hand-made, artisanal quality of the chocolate itself, we commissioned a local printing shop to use the traditional silk-screen printing techniques to hand print the design in antique gold ink on each wrapper. The finished packaging is then given to Marou who then hand wrap the chocolate bars.

Heineken, Pecha Kucha and Cool Hunting
Description coolhunting
Gathering at a loft in New York CIty, CH’s very own Evan Orensten joined Mark Dytham of PechaKucha and Heineken’s Global Head of Design Mark van Iterson to sort through the 100 finalists from the Heineken Limited Edition Design Contest. Narrowing down the worthy competitors from 30,000 entries, they selected the three design pair finalists. Each pair represents a mix of designs that two individual designers created and came together to create one bottle that marries the two designs. The finalists represent six nationalities and professional backgrounds. The designs themselves reflect an interpretation of how people will connect in the next 140 years—a nod to Heineken’s 140 year history.
The shortlisted design pairs include Ray Muniz of Puerto Rico and Gusztav Tomcsanyi of Hungary, Stefan Pilipović of Serbia and Fabio Cianciola of Italy, as well as Rodolfo Kusulas of Mexico and Lee Dunford of Australia. The winning partnership will be announced the week of 26 March 2012, and their design will be launched worldwide in December 2012 as part of Heineken’s 140th anniversary limited-edition gift pack.

Popbar
Description coolhunting
The sweet shop warms up with Hot Chocolate on a Stick
Churning out a flavorful variety of portable ice cream, yogurt and sorbet snacks from their NYC shop, popbar has us hooked on a warmer sweet.
The newest addition to the brand’s all-natural, kosher-certified lineup (including vegan sorbet varieties) is Hot Chocolate on a Stick, a treat as simple and sweet as the name implies. To whip up an instant mug, dip a chunk of dark, milk or vanilla-white chocolate into hot milk, stir for a minute and sip. Popbar’s chocolate-bar consistency seems to blend more easily than typical powder cocoas and, most importantly, does so quickly. Add more milk to temper the sweetness, or split one between two cups for just a hint of flavor.
Hot Chocolate on a Stick is available at popbar’s West Village shop and, for those outside New York, on Amazon for $3 a piece or in gift sets of six for $18 and 12 for $36.

Dynamo Typocolate Project: Typographic Chocolate Holiday Gifts
Description godynamo
Update: Now you can buy Typocolate bars, in sets of two! Available only on the Dynamo Online Shop.
Update: download the iPhone/iPad/Desktop wallpapers of the type designs here!
Along with the arrival of each holiday season here at Dynamo, comes the challenge of coming up with a new and original concept for the gift we send off to our friends, clients and collaborators. The idea is to show our appreciation for all of the fun stuff they let us get away with throughout the year, and hopefully spread a little holiday cheer while we’re at it. It’s also a chance to step outside of our digital comfort zone and experiment with unfamiliar mediums. This year, we conquered chocolate.
After a couple of brainstorm sessions filled with chocolate bar sketching and of course obligatory tastings, we settled on the concept of combining original type design with gourmet chocolate. Once we’d created our custom type designs, we teamed up with the folks over at Suite 88, Montréal’s premier chocolatier, and let them work their magic. The result? Some seriously heavyweight slabs of chocolate, engraved with positive mantras for the new year. Check out all the designs below.

Michelberger Booze Company
Description lovelypackage
Designed by Michelberger Hotel | Country: Germany
“The Michelberger Hotel is a hotel in Berlin which has a design studio inside as part of its business. The studio does all the design work for the hotel and for its many other projects. We’ve been in Creative Review and D&AD amongst others.
Brief: The Michelberger Hotel together with The Preussiche Spirituosen Manufaktur in Berlin, have partnered up to create a new brand – the Michelberger Booze Company.
For our first product, we have created a pair of herbal schnaps drinks based on two old, forgotten recipes. Michelberger 35% is a golden liquid, a herbal liquor, smooth, earthy and warming and Michelberger 45% is a herbal distillate, clear, airy and invigorating.
The drinks are a complimentary pair, so the designs are more or less a symmetrical reflection of one another. The brand lives in the world of old German fairytales and so one bottle is set in a forest and the other in the mountain so as to reflect the qualities of the respective drinks. A drink is like a mask, it lets you feel something else or even become someone else, and so the visual concept is based around two masks – a wolf in the forest and a bird in the mountains.”

The Hill Station
Description lovlypackage
Designed by Studio Egregius | Country: Vietnam
“The Hill Station is a business marriage of fine dining restaurant and deli/boutique, located in Sapa, Vietnam’s highest region. The client wanted a brand which both reminisces the essence of French Indochine days while standing independently as a contemporary identity. The Hill Station products range from fresh produce harvested straight from local farms, limited packaged delicacies such as wild honey, rice wine… to gourmet charcuteries or handmade silverware. At the same time, The Hill Station signature restaurant is a renovated French outpost, with a view from the clouds.
The design is inspired from Indochine’s visual cultures, from photographs, drawings, literary & cinema, architecture… and executed in a uniformed minimalist style. A fusion of the past and the current.”

The Tigra Girl
Description ilovebelgium
The only Belgium Pin Up Girl, portrayed by an American, was actually Latvian. A good beginning for a story that ends with murder. The Latvian born, but Antwerp based Angelina Saey modelled in the early fifties in front of the highly praised pin-up illustrator Al Moore. Her cheeky grin would become iconic for the Tigra cigarette packaging.
An attractive woman to represent a cigarette brand was nothing new. Paula Bollaert already modelled in 1925 for the extremely popular Belga brand. It was partly because of her praising that Angelina was chosen by cigarette producer Van der Elst as the new face of the Tigra brand.
Although The Tigra Girl became a Belgian icon, it wasn’t until she got murdered in 1979 that the name Angelina Saey reappeared again. It was on a spring day that the 46-year-old was found murdered in her exuberant villa. Her husband and two sons discovered the body of Angelina in a big puddle of blood and with a knotted cord around her neck. It took two autopsies to conlude that this suicide was actually a brutal assassination.
Until today this murder stays unsolved. Until today Angelina is on the Tigra packaging, forever immortal.

It looks like the Daft Punk x Coca-Cola collaboration has changed a bit since we last saw it. Unless this is just another part of the limited edition collection, the former gold and silver aluminum bottles are now glass with gold and silver accents on the cap and Coca-Cola logo. Very nice!

Cervecería Sagrada
Description joseguizar
Lucha Libre is one of the most iconic symbols of Mexican popular culture, and has been exported as part of the country’s identity.
I created the concept, brand, and designed the identity and packaging for this premium Mexican craft beer.
The brand’s identity is inspired by the golden era of lucha in the 1950’s, when movie heroes were not Superman or the X Men, but El Santo and his wingmen, fighting creepy monsters on a silver ‘52 Alfa Romeo with surf music in the background.
The variety of styles are named after fictional characters also inspired by the 50’s lucha style; Black King (Imperial Stout), Blond Gomez (Lager) and The Vampire’s Son (Red Ale).
