A Letter to Momo // ももへの手紙

Description emptykingdom

April 23, 2012
By

Nowadays, I can pretty much rely on an animated feature to have a certain level of craftsmanship and style. It’s really somewhat of an expected standard. But when I heard that director Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade), animation director / character designer Masashi Ando, and art director Hiroshi Ohno were joining forces for a collaborative release, I gave a sigh of relief knowing that the bar would once again be set even higher. A Letter to Momo // ももへの手紙, appreciate it folks. More story details as follows (via TIFF 2011):

“Seven years in the making, the exquisitely crafted A Letter to Momo is the highly anticipated second feature from world-renowned anime director Hiroyuki Okiura, whose 1999 film Jin-Roh met with international acclaim.

Clinging to an unfinished letter written by her recently deceased father, young Momo moves with her mother from bustling Tokyo to the remote Japanese island of Shio. Upon their arrival, she begins to explore her new habitat, meeting local children and learning their routines and customs. However, it’s not long before several bizarre occurrences crop up around the previously tranquil island. Orchards are found ransacked, prized trinkets start disappearing and, worst of all, each morning after her mother leaves for work, Momo hears strange mumblings coming from the attic of their home.

Annoyed by these creepy goings-on and her mother’s refusal to believe them, Momo embarks on a strange and supernatural adventure to discover the source of the mischief, which leads her to a trio of troublesome imps: the flatulent lizard Kawa, the childlike Mame and their hulking ogre leader Iwa. Momo also learns that her visit to the island is in some way connected to her father’s mysterious letter.

After a decade-long absence from the director’s chair, Okiura has enlisted a world-class team of creators, including animation supervisor Masashi Ando, who previously worked on Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. From the painstakingly rendered serenity of the island’s Shinto shrines to the film’s high-energy, ghostly climax, A Letter to Momo is a triumph of traditional hand-drawn animation. This sensitive coming-of-age story is both a child-friendly exploration of loss and an enchanting flight of imagination.”

Trailer: The Grandmasters

DEscription emptykingdom

While my dark apron is the man who runs the cinema dept. I couldn’t help but put up this trailer for Wong Kar Wai’s film new film that is in post-production… The Grandmasters.  The film looks like a sweet take on the legendary Ip Man.  Surely WKW’s version will be much more philosophical/artistic than the Donnie Yen incarnation…  but I’m going to say the trailer does look a lot more slick and “mainstream” than any of his previous films… either way it’s going to be awesome.  It’s supposed to premiere at Venice Film Festival, but knowing WKW’s track record, I’m not even going to speculate when it’s coming out.. but let’s just say when it does… I might just fly my ass to whatever country it is showing in.

The Deep Blue Sea Trailer

Description emptykingdom

In The Deep Blue Sea, a woman’s impassioned and enigmatic struggles between her husband and a new lover become the subject of focus in the latest postwar England drama by the great Terence Davies. Originally adapted from a play with the same name by Terence Rattigan. Read the more detailed synopsis as follows (via TIFF 2011):

“Postwar England has been a recurring and vital setting for Terence Davies. His semiautobiographical masterpieces Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, as well as the bulk of his rapturous documentary Of Time and the City, take place largely in the fifties and movingly evoke the hardship and camaraderie of that era.

The Deep Blue Sea is also a product of that age. An adaptation of a famous play by British playwright Terence Rattigan, it features one of the greatest roles for an actress in modern theatre; Peggy Ashcroft, Vivien Leigh, Penelope Keith and Blythe Danner have all taken a swing at it. Joining them now in an impossibly intimate and deeply vulnerable performance is Rachel Weisz. She plays Hester Collyer, the former wife of a high-WASP judge, now the nearly abandoned lover of a drunken former World War II pilot. Emotionally stranded and physically isolated, she attempts suicide to win him back and perhaps also to send a message to her former husband. Her gesture serves only to estrange her more from the men in her life and reality itself.

Davies cleverly strips away many of the play’s supporting characters and expands the film visually and psychologically into Lady Collyer’s dream life. Gently abstracted flashbacks take us into luminous cinematographic landscapes, including a bravura tracking shot through an underground station during the Blitz. But it is the unrelenting focus on Weisz — her face, her pain — in long, masterfully composed takes that draws us inside her utter desperation and the desperation of the British people, struggling to rebuild their society after a calamitous war and the loss of an Empire.”

The Ambassador

Description emptykingdom

Director Mads Brügger goes undercover as a South African diplomat to reveal the nefarious and bizarre underworld of backdoor political scheming. The Ambassador is a Gonzo-journalistic documentary with strokes of dark comedy. Official summary can be read as follows:

“A strange, enigmatic and decadent white diplomat arrives in central Africa, looking like a mixture of Henry Stanley and Karl Lagerfeld. He has recently bought an ambassadorship and claims to be a do-good rich business man, who has come to spearhead a diplomatic mission.Officially he is there to start a factory that produces matches – this, to employ locals and teach how to make this simple piece of fire-making equipment. Unofficially he is really there to gain access to vast reserves of diamonds. The Ambassador is a genre-breaking, tragic comedy about the bizarre world of African diplomacy.”
